von Karajan played a major role in designing the first ever CD. He did lend his expertise on the audio stuff. He wanted it to be long enough to fit Beethoven's Scherzo, 9th SYmphony. The first ever piece recorded, was Richard Strauss' Alpeinsinfonie.
